 Book Recommendation

1956 book.jpgThe Fall of the Red Star by Helen M. Szablya  Co-Authored by Peggy King Anderson

In this fast-moving novel of the Hungarian Revolution is based on the true-life account of the Szablya family's dramatic struggle for freedom. At the heart of the novel is fourteen-year-old Stephen, who as a boy saw his father taken away by the police. Stephen knows only a Hungary governed by the iron fist of Communism, where gathering in crowds is forbidden and boy scouting is illegal. Then comes the 1956 uprising and he finds himself with a rifle in his hand. Four days of freedom are hard won, then mercilessly crushed by the Soviets. Now Stephen and his family must make a run for the border and freedom.

The book also has a Hungarian version "A voros csillag lehull" which could be acquired through Ilona Szablya (Email). The English version could be bought here: The fall of the red star.

PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN: THERESA MOLNÁR

By Márta Boros Horváth

The goal of the editors of HIREK and the Board of the Association with this column is community building. For weeks now it has been on my mind, who should be my first interview subject. I wanted someone who has been around the Association, perhaps from its inception, but who is less known to the current, younger generation. After some careful considerations my choice fell on Theresa Molnár. I hope that our readers will find her as remarkable and as interesting of an individual as I do.
